How to Add a Camera (Manual / Scan Network / CSV Bulk Import)

Step-by-step guide to adding cameras to Genea Video - manually, by scanning the network, or via CSV bulk import.

Written by Anmol Gupta

Genea Video supports three methods for adding cameras to your account. Choose the method that best fits your situation.

Method

Best for

Manual

Adding one camera when you already know its RTSP URL and credentials

Scan Network

Discovering cameras already connected to your local network

CSV Bulk Import

Adding 2–100 cameras at once via spreadsheet

Before you begin: Make sure at least one Genea Gateway is set up and online. All cameras stream through the gateway, you'll assign each camera to a gateway during setup.

To get started, go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras and click + Add in the top-right corner.

Note: Our current AI features work best on H264, and soon we are optimizing for H265 as well. So make sure your cameras are set to H264 and RTSP is enabled.

Method 1: Add a Camera Manually

Use this when you have the camera's RTSP URL and credentials on hand.

  1. Go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras

  2. Click + Add and select Manually

  3. Fill in the camera details:

    • Name (required) — A descriptive label for the camera (e.g., "Main Lobby", "Parking East"). Must be unique within your account.

    • Description (optional) — Up to 250 characters

    • RTSP URL (required) — The full stream URL, starting with rtsp://

    • Username / Password — The camera's login credentials

    • MAC Address — Format: AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF

    • IP Address — The camera's IP address on your local network

    • Manufacturer / Model (optional) — For your records

    • Camera Placement — Select Indoor or Outdoor

      • Note: Based on this our detection model will provide accurate results for person and vehicle detection

    • Gateway (required) — The gateway this camera will connect through.

      • Note : You'll get an error if the maximum number of cameras that you can add to a gateway is reached.

    • Retention Period (days) — How long recordings are stored (default: 30 days)

  4. Click Save

The camera appears in your camera list. If the RTSP URL and credentials are correct, the camera status will change to Online within a few minutes.

Method 2: Scan Network

Use this to discover cameras that are already connected to your local network. Genea probes the network and presents what it finds.

  1. Go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras

  2. Click + Add and select Network Scan

  3. Select the Location (site) you want to scan

  4. Click Scan — Genea probes the network and lists all discovered cameras, showing each camera's name, IP address, MAC address, and detected RTSP URL

  5. Browse the results. Use the search bar to filter by name, or increase the page size to see more cameras at once

  6. Click + Add next to the camera you want to add

  7. Fill in the details:

    • Name — Replace the auto-generated ID with a descriptive name

    • RTSP URL — Genea discovers multiple possible stream paths on the camera. Select the one that matches your stream format (e.g., rtsp://10.x.x.x/1.AMP). If unsure, check your camera manufacturer's documentation.

    • Username / Password — The camera's login credentials

    • Camera Placement — Select Indoor or Outdoor

      • Note: Based on this our detection model will provide accurate results for person and vehicle detection

    • Gateway (required) — The gateway this camera will connect through.

      • Note : You'll get an error if the maximum number of cameras that you can add to a gateway is reached.

  8. Click Save

  9. Repeat for any other cameras from the scan results

💡 Tip: The number of newly discovered cameras is shown at the top of the results panel (e.g., "9 new cameras discovered"). Cameras already added to your account will not appear here.

Method 3: CSV Bulk Import

Use this to add multiple cameras at once — up to 100 cameras per file.

Step 1: Upload your CSV file

  1. Go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras

  2. Click + Add and select CSV Bulk Import

  3. Click Download Sample File to get the CSV template with the correct column headers

  4. Fill in your camera data. File limits:

    • Maximum 100 cameras per file

    • Maximum file size: 5 MB

  5. Drag and drop your completed CSV into the upload area, or click Browse to select the file

  6. Click Next

Step 2: Map gateways

  1. For each camera in your CSV, use the dropdown to assign it to a gateway. You can assign all cameras to the same gateway, or assign them individually

  2. Click Import

Your cameras are added and will appear in the camera list. Any rows with validation errors (e.g., duplicate camera name, invalid RTSP URL, missing required fields) will be skipped and shown in an error summary so you can correct and re-import them.

Also, you'll get an error if the maximum number of cameras that you can add to a gateway is reached.

Removing a Camera

  1. Go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras

  2. Locate the camera and click Actions

  3. Select Delete

  4. Review the warning and click Delete to confirm

⚠️ Warning: Deleting a camera may impact mapped devices and video feeds. This action cannot be undone.

Troubleshooting

Issue

What to check

Camera stays Offline after adding

Verify the RTSP URL starts with rtsp:// and that the username and password are correct

No gateway available to select

Go to Device Management → Gateways and confirm at least one gateway is online

Network Scan finds no cameras

Confirm cameras are on the same subnet as the gateway and are powered on

CSV import shows errors or skips rows

Check that the file is under 100 cameras and 5 MB, all required column headers match the sample file exactly, and every RTSP URL starts with rtsp://

"Camera name already exists" error

Each camera name must be unique within your account. Rename the camera and try again.
