How to Configure Camera Settings

Learn how to edit camera details, configure recording modes and motion sensitivity, map access control devices, and read event logs for a camera in Genea Video.

Written by Anmol Gupta

Each camera in Genea Video has its own settings page where you can update its details, control how it records, link it to access control devices, and review its event history.

To open a camera's settings, go to Video Management → Device Management → Cameras and click the camera's name.

Camera Details

The top section of the camera page shows a live thumbnail alongside the camera's key properties: MAC address, IP address, manufacturer, model, retention period, camera placement, and the last-updated timestamp.

Live Preview

  1. The camera thumbnail on the settings page is a live preview — click it to start streaming that camera's live feed directly on the page.

  2. To open the full video player for this camera, click the icon in the top-right corner of the page. This opens the player in a new tab, where you can access the timeline, playback controls, and event overlays.

Edit Camera Details

To edit camera details, click Edit in the top-right corner of the page. The edit panel contains the same fields available when adding a camera manually:

  • Name — Must be unique within your account

  • Description (optional) — Up to 250 characters

  • RTSP URL — The camera's stream URL (must start with rtsp://)

  • Username / Password — Camera login credentials

  • MAC Address / IP Address

  • Manufacturer / Model (optional)

  • Camera Placement — Select Indoor or Outdoor

    • Note: Based on this our detection model will provide accurate results for person and vehicle detection

  • Gateway (non-editable) — The gateway is a non-editable field since it was already mapped to the gateway selected during camera onboarding. You need to re-onboard a camera to shift it to different gateway.

  • Retention Period (days) — How long recordings are stored

Click Save when done.

Monitoring Configuration

The Monitoring Configuration section controls how the camera records and how motion is detected. Click Edit in this section to open the configuration panel.

Recording Mode

Choose between two recording modes:

  1. Continuous — The camera records 24/7, regardless of activity. All footage is stored for the configured retention period.

  2. Motion Only — The camera records only when motion is detected. Two additional settings appear:

Motion Settings

  • Before Motion (sec) — How many seconds of footage to capture before the motion event is detected.

  • After Motion (sec) — How many seconds of footage to capture after the motion event ends.

These settings also affect the motion ribbon in the video player timeline. When you review footage, the orange motion segments on the timeline will reflect the before-and-after window you've configured — so a longer window means a wider motion bar around each event.

💡 Note: Even in Continuous mode, you can still configure Before Motion and After Motion. The recording remains 24/7, but the motion ribbon in the video player timeline uses these values to determine how wide to draw each motion segment around detected events.

Motion Sensitivity

The Motion Sensitivity slider (0%–100%) controls how much change in the camera's frame is required to trigger a motion event.

  • Low sensitivity — Only significant movement triggers motion. Minor changes like light flickers, shadows, or outdoor lighting shifts are ignored. Recommended as a starting point.

  • High sensitivity — Very small changes trigger motion. Useful for detecting subtle movement, but may generate false positives from lighting changes, reflections, or moving foliage.

Note: Motion senstivity is highly subjective and depends on the environment, camera model, lighting, background, resolution etc. So if unsure you can start with 60% and then make tweaks after monitoring for few hours.

Motion sensitivity applies in both Continuous and Motion Only recording modes — it determines which events appear in the motion ribbon and event feed.

Click Save to apply changes.

Mapped Devices

Link access control devices like doors and sensors to this camera to see access events on the video timeline and jump to footage directly from event logs. Learn how to map devices →

Event Logs & Audit Logs

The bottom of the camera page contains two log tabs:

Event Logs — Shows camera and access events associated with this camera over the last 90 days (filterable). Each row displays the event type, description, and timestamp.

Audit Logs — Shows a history of configuration changes made to this camera (who edited it and when).

Troubleshooting

Issue

What to check

No Access ribbon in the video timeline

The door or device generating access events must be mapped to the camera under Mapped Devices

Event log entries have no video link

Same as above — the event's source device must be mapped to this camera

Too many false motion events

Lower the Motion Sensitivity slider. Start at lower senstivity and increase gradually until you capture real movement without excessive false positives

Motion clips feel too short or too long

Adjust the Before Motion and After Motion values in Monitoring Configuration

Camera shows Offline after editing RTSP URL

Verify the new URL starts with rtsp:// and the username/password are correct
