Understanding Genea Video Licensing

How camera licences work, how to assign and reassign them, and what happens if a camera streams above its licensed plan.

Written by Anmol Gupta

Every camera in Genea Video is assigned a licence. How that licence works depends on whether the camera connects through a gateway or uses Cam2Cloud - the two models are different.

This article explains both, how to assign licences, and what happens if a gateway camera streams above what its licence allows.

Gateway camera plans

A gateway camera licence is a single combined unit, not a set of separate options. Each licence bundles three things together:

  • Resolution - for example 1080p or 4K

  • Retention - how many days of footage are kept in the cloud

  • Recording mode - Motion Only or Continuous

So 1080p · 30 days · Motion Only is one licence type and 4K · 90 days · Continuous is a different one. They aren't interchangeable, and you can't mix parts of one with parts of another.

Your account can hold several gateway licence types at once, and you choose which to apply to each camera.

Cam2Cloud camera plans

Cam2Cloud licences work differently, and more simply.

A Cam2Cloud licence is just a camera count. It carries no resolution, no retention, and no recording mode. Plans are grouped by camera manufacturer, and all you're buying is the number of cameras you can onboard.

Your licence never changes based on camera settings. Raise the resolution, frame rate, or bit rate as much as the camera supports - the licence stays exactly the same and there's nothing to breach.

The reason is architectural: Cam2Cloud records to the camera's own SD card rather than to Genea's cloud.

Your settings still affect retention, just not your licence. Higher resolution, frame rate, or bit rate fills the SD card faster, which means fewer days of footage. Retention on Cam2Cloud is determined entirely by your SD card capacity and the settings you choose - there's no licensed retention figure to fall back on.

See How to Add an Axis Cam-to-Cloud Camera for how settings affect recording time.

You can run gateway and Cam2Cloud cameras in the same account.

Viewing your licences

Go to Subscription [Global Overview -> Settings -> Subscription] and find the Video Management section, which lists your Gateway Camera Plans and Cam2Cloud Camera Plans separately.

Each plan shows a usage bar, how many licences are in use, and how many slots remain. A summary at the top shows total cameras onboarded against total capacity.

Only Global Administrators can view the Subscription page. To change what you've purchased, contact Genea.

Who receives licence emails

All communications relating to your video licences - including warning alerts, enforcement alerts etc - are sent to the addresses listed under Default Email Recipient on the Subscription page.

Add or remove addresses there to control who gets notified. If your team isn't receiving licence emails, this is the first place to check.

Assigning a licence

You select a licence while onboarding, whichever method you use. See How to Add a Camera on Gateway - Manual/Scan Network/CSV Bulk Import | How to Add an Axis Cam-to-Cloud Camera for the full onboarding flows.

Method

Where you select the licence

Manual

In the Add Camera form, alongside the other camera details

Network Scan

In the step after choosing the camera's RTSP URL

CSV Bulk Import

In the step after uploading your file, where you also map gateways

Each option shows how many slots remain. Plans with no slots left appear greyed out and can't be selected - free one up by reassigning or removing another camera, or contact Genea to purchase more.

Reassigning a licence

A camera isn't locked to the licence it was onboarded with. To move it to a different plan, open the camera's detail page and click Reassign License.

For gateway cameras, this is the quickest way to resolve one that's streaming above its current plan.

Staying within your gateway plan

💡 This section applies to gateway cameras only. Cam2Cloud cameras are never checked against stream settings, because the licence doesn't define any.

Genea periodically checks what each gateway camera is actually streaming against what its licence allows. Three things are measured:

Measured

Maximum limit

Resolution

Must not exceed the licensed tier

Frame rate

12 fps

Bit rate

2 Mbps for 1080p, 8 Mbps for 4K

Limits can vary by plan, so check your Subscription page for the values that apply to you.

Warning phase

When a gateway camera is confirmed to be streaming above its licence, it enters a 48-hour warning phase.

Nothing stops during this window. Recording, live view, playback, clips, and automations all continue exactly as normal. The warning is there to give you time to act.

You'll see it in three places:

Device Management - a banner at the top of the camera list, with a link to the affected cameras.

Camera detail page - showing which parameter breached, its current value against the licensed value, and how much time remains.

Video player - a banner with a link through to the camera's detail page.

An email is also sent to everyone on your Default Email Recipient list on the Subscription page.

Resolving it

Two ways, both from the camera's detail page:

  1. Reassign the licence - move the camera to a plan that covers what it's streaming, if you have one available

  2. Change the camera's settings - lower the resolution, frame rate, or bit rate in the camera's own interface to bring it back within the licensed limits

Wait for few minutes, If the check passes, the warning clears and the camera returns to normal. If it still fails, the camera stays in warning and the UI shows which parameter is still over.

⚠️ The 48-hour clock does not pause or reset. An unsuccessful fix attempt doesn't buy more time, and the clock continues even if the camera goes offline during the window.

Enforcement phase

If the 48 hours pass without the camera being brought back into compliance, it moves to enforcement.

At that point:

  • Recording stops on that camera

  • Live view stops

  • The gateway stops pulling the stream entirely

Your existing footage is not deleted. Everything recorded before enforcement remains available for playback, clip export, and search until it ages out normally under your retention period. You simply won't accumulate anything new while the camera is enforced.

The camera's detail page shows exactly when enforcement began, along with both resolution actions.

An email is sent to your Default Email Recipient list when enforcement begins.

Returning to normal

Resolution works the same way as in the warning phase - reassign the licence or correct the camera's settings.

Wait for a few minutes, once the check passes, recording and live view resume automatically. There's a visible gap in the timeline for the enforced period, since no footage was captured then.

💡 If a camera was enforced while offline and you fixed the issue during that time, it resolves as soon as it reconnects - you aren't penalised for the timing.

Troubleshooting

Issue

What to check

Can't select a licence when adding a camera

That plan has no slots remaining. Free one by reassigning or removing another camera, or contact Genea to purchase more

Didn't receive a warning or enforcement email

Check the Default Email Recipient list on the Subscription page. Only addresses listed there receive video licence notifications

Gateway camera in warning but settings look correct

Check all three measured values - frame rate and bit rate trigger warnings just as resolution does. The camera detail page names the specific parameter

Recheck keeps failing

Confirm the change was applied on the camera itself and not just in Genea. The detail page shows which parameter is still over the limit

Enforced camera - is my old footage gone?

No. Footage recorded before enforcement stays available until it expires under your normal retention period

Gateway camera keeps re-entering warning

Something is resetting the camera's stream settings, or the camera is on an automatic profile that raises bit rate under activity. Consider reassigning to a higher plan

Cam2Cloud camera losing footage quickly

Not a licensing issue. Lower the resolution, frame rate, or bit rate, switch to Motion Only recording, or fit a larger SD card

Streaming below my licence - will I be warned?

No. Only exceeding your plan triggers a warning, and only on gateway cameras
