Clips let you export a specific segment of recorded footage as a standalone video file useful for sharing an incident with your team, handing evidence to law enforcement, or keeping a record of something before it ages out of retention.
This article covers creating a clip from the video player, then finding and managing your saved clips.
Creating a clip
Step 1: Open the clip panel
From the video player, click Clips in the top-right toolbar.
Monitoring → select a camera → Clips
Or from any place from where you can open the Genea video player
The Export Video Clip panel opens on the right, and two draggable markers appear on the timeline.
Step 2: Set the clip details
Field | Notes |
Camera | Pre-filled with the camera you're viewing |
Name | Required. Give it something you'll recognise later — "Person motion test" is more useful than "clip 4" |
Description | Optional, up to 250 characters. Worth using for context on why the clip was taken |
Start Date-Time | Beginning of the clip |
End Date-Time | End of the clip |
Step 3: Set the time range
There are two ways to define the clip boundaries, and they stay in sync - adjust either and the other updates.
Drag the timeline markers. When the clip panel opens, a green marker and a red marker appear on the timeline. Drag the green marker to set the start point and the red marker to set the end point. This is usually the faster method, since you can see the events you're capturing as you adjust.
Or type exact times. Use the Start and End Date-Time fields for precise boundaries when you know the exact timestamps.
💡 Tip: Position the markers around the event you care about using the timeline's event bands as your guide - the amber, green, purple, and blue segments show you exactly where the activity is.
Step 4: Export
Click Export Clip. The clip is queued for processing and appears in the Clips list, where you can track its status.
Clip limits
Maximum length: 5 minutes. If you need to cover a longer period, export several consecutive clips
Account clip limit. There is a cap on the total number of clips your account can export, determined by your licence tier. Check the Subscription page to see your current allowance
Other places you can create a clip
The clip export tool is available anywhere the video player appears - not just the Monitoring page. This includes the pop-out player and the full Genea video player opened from other parts of the portal.
You can also create a clip directly from an event: click an event on the timeline or in the side panel, then click Create Clip in the event details. This pre-fills the time range around that event, so it's the quickest route when you're investigating something specific.
Managing your clips
All exported clips are saved to the Clips page.
Video Management → Clips
The clips list
Column | Shows |
Name | The clip name. Click to open it |
Description | Optional description, if one was added |
Camera | Source camera |
File Size | Size of the exported file |
Duration | Length of the clip |
Status | Current processing state |
Actions | Edit, Delete, and Download options |
Use Search name to find a specific clip, or Filter to narrow the list. Most columns are sortable, and the column toggle in the top-right lets you show or hide columns.
Clip status
A clip is not available to download until processing completes.
Queued - Another clip creation is in progress and this clip will be processed after that.
Processing - The clip is being created and it'll be available to view and download shortly
Completed - Processing finished. The clip is ready to view and download
Failed - Clip creation failed due to internal error or no footage exists in between.
Viewing a clip
Click a clip name to open it. The detail view shows the clip playing alongside:
General Details
Camera and Duration
Created By and Created On
File Size and Status
Description
Date-Time Range - the exact start and end timestamps the clip covers
Snapshot - Captures the current frame of the clip and downloads it as an image
Download - Downloads the clip video to your browser
Editing, deleting, and downloading
From the Actions menu on any row in the clips list:
Edit — Update the clip's name or description
Delete — Permanently remove the clip
Download — Save the clip to your browser without opening it first
⚠️ Note: Deleting a clip cannot be undone. The original footage remains on the camera's recording until it ages out of retention, so you can export a new clip from the same period as long as the footage still exists.
Troubleshooting
Issue | What to check |
Export Clip button is disabled | Check that a name has been entered and the selected range is within the 5-minute limit |
Clip range won't extend further | Clips are capped at 5 minutes. Export multiple consecutive clips to cover a longer period |
Cannot export any new clips | Your account may have reached its clip limit for the current licence tier. Check the Subscription page |
Clip stuck before Completed | Larger clips take longer to process. If it hasn't completed after several minutes, contact support |
Timeline markers not appearing | The markers only appear once the Clips panel is open. Close and reopen the panel if needed |
Cannot create a clip for a past date | The footage must still be within the camera's retention window. Check the retention period on the camera settings page |
